Genealogy from Reuben

Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel (for (A)he was the firstborn, but because (B)he defiled his father’s bed, (C)his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph the son of Israel; so that he is not enrolled in the genealogy according to the birthright. (D)Though Judah prevailed over his brothers, and (E)from him came the leader, yet the birthright belonged to Joseph), (F)the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel were Hanoch and Pallu, Hezron and Carmi. The sons of Joel were Shemaiah his son, Gog his son, (G)Shimei his son, Micah his son, Reaiah his son, Baal his son, Beerah his son, whom [a]Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria carried away into exile; he was leader of the Reubenites. His [b]kinsmen by their families, (H)in the genealogy of their generations, were Jeiel the chief, then Zechariah and Bela the son of Azaz, the son of Shema, the son of Joel, who lived in (I)Aroer, even to Nebo and Baal-meon. To the east he settled as far as the entrance of the wilderness from the river Euphrates, (J)because their cattle had increased in the land of Gilead. 10 In the days of Saul (K)they made war with the Hagrites, who fell by their hand, so that they [c]occupied their tents throughout [d]all the land east of Gilead.

11 Now the sons of Gad lived opposite them in the land of (L)Bashan as far as (M)Salecah. 12 Joel was the chief and Shapham the second, then Janai and Shaphat in Bashan. 13 Their [e]kinsmen of their fathers’ households were Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jacan, Zia and Eber, seven. 14 These were the sons of Abihail, the son of Huri, the son of Jaroah, the son of Gilead, the son of Michael, the son of Jeshishai, the son of Jahdo, the son of Buz; 15 Ahi the son of Abdiel, the son of Guni, was head of their fathers’ households. 16 They lived in Gilead, in Bashan and in its towns, and in all the pasture lands of (N)Sharon, as far as their [f]borders. 17 All of these were enrolled in the genealogies in the days of (O)Jotham king of Judah and in the days of (P)Jeroboam king of Israel.

18 The sons of Reuben and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, consisting of valiant men, men who bore shield and sword and shot with bow and were skillful in battle, were 44,760, who (Q)went to war. 19 They made war against (R)the Hagrites, (S)Jetur, Naphish and Nodab. 20 They were helped against them, and the Hagrites and all who were with them were given into their hand; for (T)they cried out to God in the battle, and He answered their prayers because (U)they trusted in Him. 21 They took away their cattle: their 50,000 camels, 250,000 sheep, 2,000 donkeys; and 100,000 [g]men. 22 For many fell slain, because (V)the war was of God. And (W)they settled in their place until the (X)exile.

23 Now the sons of the half-tribe of Manasseh lived in the land; from Bashan to Baal-hermon and (Y)Senir and Mount Hermon they were numerous. 24 These were the heads of their fathers’ households, even Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah and Jahdiel, mighty men of valor, famous men, heads of their fathers’ households.

25 But they (Z)acted treacherously against the God of their fathers and (AA)played the harlot (AB)after the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had destroyed before them. 26 So the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of (AC)Pul, king of Assyria, even the spirit of [h]Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria, and he (AD)carried them away into exile, namely the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, and brought them to Halah, Habor, Hara and to the river of Gozan, to this day.

10 All nations (A)surrounded me;
In the name of the Lord I will surely (B)cut them off.
11 They (C)surrounded me, yes, they surrounded me;
In the name of the Lord I will surely cut them off.
12 They surrounded me (D)like bees;
They were extinguished as a (E)fire of thorns;
In the name of the Lord I will surely cut them off.
13 You (F)pushed me violently so that I [a]was falling,
But the Lord (G)helped me.
14 [b](H)The Lord is my strength and song,
And He has become (I)my salvation.

15 The sound of (J)joyful shouting and salvation is in the tents of the righteous;
The (K)right hand of the Lord does valiantly.
16 The (L)right hand of the Lord is exalted;
The right hand of the Lord does valiantly.
17 I (M)will not die, but live,
And (N)tell of the works of [c]the Lord.
18 [d]The Lord has (O)disciplined me severely,
But He has (P)not given me over to death.

Principles of Conscience

14 Now (A)accept the one who is (B)weak in faith, but not for the purpose of passing judgment on his opinions. (C)One person has faith that he may eat all things, but he who is (D)weak eats vegetables only. The one who eats is not to (E)regard with contempt the one who does not eat, and the one who does not eat is not to (F)judge the one who eats, for God has (G)accepted him. (H)Who are you to judge the [a]servant of another? To his own [b]master he stands or falls; and he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

(I)One person [c]regards one day above another, another regards every day alike. Each person must be (J)fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day, observes it for the Lord, and he who eats, [d]does so for the Lord, for he (K)gives thanks to God; and he who eats not, for the Lord he does not eat, and gives thanks to God. For not one of us (L)lives for himself, and not one dies for himself; for if we live, we live for the Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord; therefore (M)whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end (N)Christ died and lived again, that He might be (O)Lord both of the dead and of the living.

10 But you, why do you judge your brother? Or you again, why do you (P)regard your brother with contempt? For (Q)we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. 11 For it is written,

(R)As I live, says the Lord, (S)every knee shall bow to Me,
And every tongue shall [e]give praise to God.”

12 So then (T)each one of us will give an account of himself to God.

13 Therefore let us not (U)judge one another anymore, but rather determine this—(V)not to put an obstacle or a stumbling block in a brother’s way. 14 I know and am convinced [f]in the Lord Jesus that (W)nothing is unclean in itself; but to him who (X)thinks anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. 15 For if because of food your brother is hurt, you are no longer (Y)walking according to love. (Z)Do not destroy with your food him for whom Christ died. 16 Therefore (AA)do not let what is for you a good thing be [g]spoken of as evil; 17 for the kingdom of God (AB)is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and (AC)peace and (AD)joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 For he who in this way (AE)serves Christ is (AF)acceptable to God and approved by men. 19 So then [h]we (AG)pursue the things which make for peace and the (AH)building up of one another. 20 (AI)Do not tear down the work of God for the sake of food. (AJ)All things indeed are clean, but (AK)they are evil for the man who eats [i]and gives offense. 21 (AL)It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine, or to do anything by which your brother stumbles. 22 The faith which you have, have [j]as your own conviction before God. Happy is he who (AM)does not condemn himself in what he approves. 23 But (AN)he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin.
